2023 Sejong Institute Korean Speaking Contest

 2023년 세종학당 한국어 말하기 대회가 열렸는데요. 

참가자들이 보여준 한국어에 대한 열정이 너무나 아름답게 느껴졌습니다. 

여기서는 참가자들의 한국어 연설을 보며, 좋은 표현이나 실수 등을 살펴보겠습니다.  

다만, 실수를 정정함에 있어 이 분들의 실력을 폄하하거나 비난하는 의도는 전혀 없음을 미리 밝힙니다. 

참가자들은 모두 수준급 이상의 한국어 구사자이며 그들조차도  틀리는 부분이 있다면 그것이 바로 여러분들이 한국어를 공부할 때 가장 어려워하는 영역일 것입니다. 

영상을 보시면 아시겠지만 참가자들 모두 너무나 훌륭한 내용과 발음으로 연설하고 있음을 알게 될 거예요. 

자 그럼 이제 같이 영상을 보며 이야기 해 볼까요?

The 2023 Sejong Institute Korean Speaking Contest was held, and the participants’ passion for the Korean language was truly inspiring.

Here, we will watch the participants' Korean speeches and examine good expressions as well as any mistakes they made.

However, I want to make it clear that the purpose of correcting mistakes is not to undermine or criticize their skills in any way.

All the participants are highly proficient in Korean, and if even they make mistakes, it means those areas are likely the most challenging aspects of learning Korean.

As you will see in the video, every participant delivers an excellent speech with impressive content and pronunciation.

질문자 : 꿈을 꼭 이뤘으면 좋겠다라는 생각 하는데요.

좋은 배우가 되기 위해서는 어떤 노력이 필요하다고 생각하세요?

Interviewer: I truly hope you achieve your dream.
What kind of effort do you think is necessary to become a great actor?

참가자 : 제 생각에는 감정을 잘 표현하는 것이 정말 중요하다고 생각해요. 

아.. 그리고 이렇게 많은 사람들 앞에서 발표하는 것도 좀.. 연습하고 

자신감도 좀.. 가지고 그렇게 하면 좋은 배우가 될 수 있을 것 같아요.

그리고 또 어..  연기 실력, 분명히.. 이것도 좀 배워야 돼요. 

그 다음에 좋은 배우가 될 수 있을 것 같습니다. 

Participant: In my opinion, being able to express emotions well is really important.
Ah... and practicing how to speak in front of a large audience, gaining some confidence...
I think doing that can help someone become a good actor.
And also, um... acting skills—definitely—this is something that needs to be learned as well.
After that, I believe that I can become a great actor.

이 분은  아주 자신 있는 태도와 자연스러운 발음, 억양이 돋보이는 참가자였습니다. 외국인들이 어려워하는 ㄱ, ㅋ 와 ㅂ, ㅍ 구별이 완벽하지는 않았지만 중요한 단어에 강세를 주어 연설했기 때문에 듣는 사람이 잘 이해할 수 있었습니다. 

많은 외국인들이  한국어를 너무 또박또박 발음해서 기계음처럼 들리는 경우가 많은데요.

그럼에도 불구하고 이 참가자의  화법은 마치 친구와 이야기 하는 것처럼 자연스럽습니다. 

그런데 마지막 문장이 조금 자연스럽지 못한 느낌이 들죠? 

"연기 실력, 분명히.. 이것도 좀 배워야 돼요." 에서 주어에 해당하는  "연기실력 = 이것"에 어울리는 동사는 "키우다" 또는 " 늘리다"입니다. 

말이 길어지다 보니 처음의 주어를 잊어버린 것이죠. 

"연기 실력, 분명히 이것도 좀 늘려야 돼요"

조금 더 자연스럽고 명확하게 하려면,

"연기 실력도 반드시 키워야 하고요." 정도가 되지 않을까 싶습니다.

한국인으로서 이런 분들을 보면 정말 뿌듯하고 자랑스럽습니다.

This participant stood out with their confident attitude, natural pronunciation, and intonation.

Although their distinction between ㄱ, ㅋ and ㅂ, ㅍ, which many foreigners find difficult, wasn’t perfect, they emphasized key words in their speech, making it easy for listeners to understand.

Many foreign learners pronounce Korean too clearly, sometimes making it sound robotic.

Despite that, this participant’s speech style felt very natural, as if they were having a conversation with a friend.

However, doesn’t the last sentence sound a bit unnatural?

In the sentence:
"연기 실력, 분명히.. 이것도 좀 배워야 돼요."
The word "이것" refers to "연기 실력", and the verb "배우다" doesn’t quite fit. A more appropriate verb choice would be "키우다" or "늘리다."

It seems that as the sentence got longer, the speaker forgot the original subject.

A more natural way to phrase it would be:
"연기 실력, 분명히 이것도 좀 늘려야 돼요."

Or, to make it even clearer and more natural:
"연기 실력도 반드시 키워야 하고요."
